      This has probably been covered countless times before but I am at the stage of converting my mast step to a series 2. I have the plans from admin and the only point I am wondering about is the new mast heel. I assume you have to buy the Selden adaptor along with the std tenon plug to fit to a Proctor mast?

      I am also thinking that I might be able to get away with cutting a hole in the bulkhead that is the same size as the new wood being installed as there are two 6″ bungs on the bulkhead to at least allow at least some access. Perhaps someone has tried this way and that is why the plans suggest to cut a hole 160×150 mm.

      Hi,

      I have converted and repaired several GPs over the years and used a sharp stanley knife and small hammer to cut hole in bulkhead. The ‘spine’ has to be inserted from inside the tank and screwed down (with ones hand through same hatch in the bulkhead). I always sand hog and sit it on some thickened epoxy so as not to create a water trap. 2 further screw can be driven through the visible section at either end ( into hog/keel- about 1″ only in depth) so as not to get in way of mast step screws. There is no need for top capping bit of wood to go through bulkhead and can be cut to fit accurately against it at front. At rear usually it can be made so it is long enough to sit on the floor ( technical name for cross member )and front end of c/b case. Make sure varnish/ paint is removed prior to using epoxy. Epoxy fillets ase the best way to ensure spine is attached to hog and a watertight seal obtained as it passes thro bulkhead. ( use lollipop stick and clean off surplus with pallet knife)

      Look on eBay for a mast end plug or find a broken mast, obviously the mast section must be similar but you can get them to fit with a bit of work with an angle grinder! I like the ones with the sheaves in as they reduce the number of holes in mast and turning blocks at base of mast.
