Richard Westlake – WLYC Commodore – 16th September 2024

A fleet of 31 GP14 dinghies will be taking part in this year’s WLYC 24 Hour Race, dinghy sailing’s premier endurance event. Under the burgee of West Lancashire Yacht Club (WLYC), the much-anticipated race will take place this weekend, celebrating its 53rd edition on the picturesque Marine Lake in Southport.

Starting at 12 noon on Saturday, September 21st, and concluding at 12 noon on Sunday, September 22nd, 2024, the race promises 24 hours of non-stop GP14 sailing action alongside 20 Enterprises, making it a spectacular event for sailors and spectators alike.

GP14 dinghy racing enthusiasts have long been a cornerstone of this event, and with the pandemic behind us, we’re thrilled to welcome the return of the WLYC 24 Hour Race, a highlight in the UK dinghy sailing calendar. This race is particularly special for the GP14 community, embodying the teamwork, strategy, and endurance that are so important to the class.

The essence of the race goes beyond mere endurance; it’s a true test of the crew’s coordination and resilience, whether sailing or working behind the scenes. The GP14 association is a major part of the collaborative efforts behind the event, joining forces with other class associations, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), and sponsors like Marine Supplies Direct. This year, WLYC has modernized various aspects of the event, including online registration, volunteer management, and parking reservations to enhance the experience for participants.

The GP14 class has been essential to the WLYC 24 Hour Race since its inception in 1967, and the return of this iconic race after a five-year hiatus is a significant moment for GP14 sailors. Maintaining the classic 24-hour team race format, the event challenges teams to showcase their skill, endurance, and strategy throughout the day and night. The GP14 fleet, known for its versatility and competitive spirit, will undoubtedly be at the heart of the action, contributing to the excitement and drama that make this race so beloved.

For GP14 sailors, the race offers a unique opportunity to compete in one of the UK’s most prestigious endurance races, with multiple ‘races within the race’ keeping the competition lively throughout. Spectators will be treated to a thrilling showcase of GP14 sailing, with close-quarter racing and tactical manoeuvres, ensuring there’s never a dull moment on the water.

We look forward to welcoming GP14 teams back to Southport and celebrating the skill and camaraderie that define both the class and this iconic event.
