Hi, Having only used 2 pack Varnish and being familiar with the coat on coat method via chemical keying I was wondering if 1 pack Varnish can be built up in the same way or does one have to mechanically key between each coat thus adding time to the task.  Thanks.

The most authoritative answer probably comes from the manufacturers,  and I suspect that it may perhaps depend on exactly which one-pot product you have in mind.

International Paints’ email address for technical queries is iyp.uk@akzonobel.com

For my favourite one-pot varnish,  Schooner,  the instructions in the Data Sheet are to sand between coats.    The technical data sheet is here: https://www.international-yachtpaint.com/s3/documents/TDS/Schooner_eng_A4_20191017.pdf?_ga=2.174862626.1877383473.1667120155-451229013.1667120155

      Their website is here:  https://www.international-yachtpaint.com/en/gb/boat-paint-products

      Hope this helps,

Thank you Oliver for your reply and I have done just as you suggested and have rung not one but two manufacturers/distributors.

I am using Epifanes High Gloss with extra UV filters which looks to be similar to your International Schooner varnish so I rang both UK outlets.     They both gave similar answers taken from their info sheets which is to mechanically key between coats, the grit varies from 280 to 400.  But both very helpful Tech guys also said it is possible to overcoat with a second coat ( within the Min-Max overcoating times )  but no more than the two coats and then abrade before further coats. This should save a bit of time.  Thanks again.

      Windy.
