      Hi

Really basic question here – I’ve just been trying to re-step my mast on my series 2 duffin – I’ve been doing a complete strip down and overhaul, so also removed the two bolts from the mast track.  I read here https://www.sailboats.co.uk/media/datasheets/gp14_tuning_guide.pdf that the most aft mast track bolt should be 2845 mm from the rear of the transom – so I’ve duly put this bolt there.  However – the tenon at the bottom of my (Seldon) mast  – while about 6cm long, has a ‘cut out’ section in it – splitting the tenon into two sections – one (aft) roughly 2.4 cm, the other roughly 3.6 cm. My question is this – is there a purpose to this cut out? should it be placed over one of the bolts (either the fore or aft one)   – or should I ignore it and place the fore bolt as near to 6 cm away from the aft bolt as the holes will allow and slot the whole tenon between the two?

Hope that makes sense – thanks in advance for any wise words

Although I am not familiar with the Selden mast  –  I had a Superspars mast on my series 2 boat  –  the two masts should be interchangeable.

I suggest that the first step is to place the aftmost bolt in the specified position,  and then the forward bolt immediately forward of the (complete) tenon,  ignoring the gap part-way along the tenon.   That gap would seem to me to be superfluous;   I do not remember my Superspars mast having any such gap,  and it should be possible to drop either brand of mast into any series 2 boat without having to alter anything.

I have not double-checked that you have the correct data for the mast position;   I am leaving that to yourself.

Then gap is too prevent the mast jumping out of the step on classes that use enormous amounts of rake or to make the adjustment of the mast foot a one pin operation on classes like the solo where adjustment is commonplace.

I think you’ll find that no part of the mast may be behind the rearmost measurement point and the point doesn’t refer to the position of the bolt itself.
