      7358 is a Mk1 GRP boat registered in 1968.

I bought her a couple of years ago, at which point she was called Aguamenti (the Harry Potter ‘water’ spell) and I have the latest issued measurement certificate in my name.

I can’t find the sail number on the hull and the sails are not the originals, but 7358 would definitely have been exactly this model and age of boat, so 7358 is most likely correct.

The only other things I have worked out about her history are (1) that she was first registered as “Marty S” in July 1968 by an American owner and (2) she was raced in the CVRDA Shearwater Rallies in 2007 and 2008 (I found results and photos  from a Google search and the boat is recognisable in the photos); and (3)  the previous owner told me that he bought her off someone who had used her for club racing.

Having discovered this small amount of information, I’m now intrigued and I would like to find out more if I can!

Photo attached is from the 2007 CVRDA Shearwater Rally

      thanks and regards,

      Paul.

I hadn’t realised that CVDRA accepted GRP boats  …

A good first step to finding out something of her history would be Hugh Brazier,  the Archivist of the Class Association (contact via the Association Office).   He holds all the records,  and (provided you are a member) should be able to let you have a digital copy of our entire records for the boat which you believe she is (i.e. sail number 7358).   That will either reinforce or completely refute that you have the correct number;  and if apparently correct it may provide other information as to her history.

It is not unusual for hull numbers of early GRP boats to have disappeared over the intervening years.   They were on a metal plate which was bonded onto the moulding,  but in many cases the glue has failed and the plate is no longer present.

Stewart Elder has an extensive collection of early Class Handbooks,  so he may be able to trace her in the boat lists there.

      Hi  Oliver,

am a member and I have got a digital copy of the original registration form already from the association.  I don’t know if there is anything else available, but I have already emailed the association to ask.  I will email again and ask that my request be forwarded to Hugh Brazier and Stewart Elder (which it may well have been already).  I’m also going to take the floorboards out again and have a good look for a number, but there are other clues that the number is probably correct, e.g. it’s written on the mast foot and on the sail bag.

      thanks for your help.

      Paul.

      Excellent.

Have a look inside the forepeak,  high up on the port side,  just beneath the deck and just forward of the cockpit;    on one Mk 1 boat that I was involved with many years ago I found an identification plate bonded there.    I can’t be certain now whether the info on it was the hull number or the moulding number;   but I have heard claims that at that period they were related,  although I cannot vouch for that,  and the moulding number probably also included the year.

      Oliver
